IkeaHakers Expedit shelving bed

About a week ago I posted on IkeaHackers.net about the bed we made here at our condo using basic materials and 3 Expedit shelving units from IKEA. Some people asked for more pictures so here they are! You can also find the original pose here.

  1. I hope you still monitor this. Did you attach the plywood on top to anything? Or is it just sitting there?

Are the shelves attached to anything in any way? If so, how?

    1. WOW so sorry I actually answered this question but it seems I didn't hit "Reply" so it was not posted as a reply to your question, so just in case you never saw it :

      Sorry for the late response!
the upper part of the plywood, the part at the head of the bed, is actually attached to the middle and top corners 4x4. The only part of plywood that is only sitting there is the half that can open. The shelves aren't attached at all but they fit just perfectly there.

    1. We're in Quebec (Canada) and my girlfriend found those in stores called Winners, they usually sell brand new stuff but a season late so always at a great price. All I can get from the labels is that they were made buy "Shanghai Kaige Home Textiles" Its all the information I have sorry.
      Good luck!

    1. I have no other pictures of it sorry. The thing is I was not planning on posting it online when I made it or else I would have taken pictures from the beginning :( Feel free to ask any question though and I'll answer with as much details as I can.

  5. Hope you're still monitoring this. I'm looking to do something similar except with slats instead of the board. I'm worried that the expedits, even with a bit of reinforcement like you've done, might not be enough to bear two people. How has yours been holding up? Thanks.

    1. Hi Mark, mine stillholds really well. The expedits sides are pretty solid IMO. You have to consider that the weight is distributed by te matress. I'm 5'8" and 180 lbs and I can stand up on the board right on top the expedit without any problem.

      Good luck!

  6. Hello Alex! I finally broke my 10 year ikea bed a few months ago and have been debating on a bed to get, because i couldn't find anything that would add storage and was nice. I love this idea and want to do it. I have 3 questions:
    1) How much weight can this support?? I want to make sure it doesn't break.
    2) Is the Bed from a Queen Size or the Mattress a queen Size (Just to get an idea how to adjust sizes for a Double/Standard bed
    3) I can no longer find Expedit Shelved will Kallax do?

    I know it's an old post I hope i get a reply.

    Thanks
    Lori (Also from QC)

  7. I definitely don't update my blog anymore but I still do get the comment alerts!

1: It easily supports me and my gf, so a total of about 380lbs + the weight of the mattress. The 4x4 in each corners and in the middle makes it pretty damn solid.

2: the mattress is a Queen Size. A King size mattress would be a bit larger than the bed.

3: the kallax seems smaller in height. My Expedit are 5units while the Kallax all seem to be 4units so you might have to take that into account.

    Good luck!
